North Wales MS Gareth Davies warns growing support for a wealth tax would leave Wales poorer.

Member of the Senedd for the Vale of Clwyd, and Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism, Sport, and North Wales, Gareth Davies, has issued a firm warning that proposals for a UK-wide Wealth Tax, now being championed by Plaid Cymru, the Green Party, and encouraged by several Welsh Labour politicians, would ultimately damage Wales’ economy and reduce the very tax revenues its supporters hope to increase.

Speaking during an open debate in the Senedd tabled by Welsh Labour backbencher Julie Morgan, Mr Davies highlighted how the idea of a Wealth Tax is gaining political traction despite significant evidence from other countries showing the policy’s unintended consequences. He noted that while the concept can appear popular at first glance, international experience demonstrates that such taxes frequently drive investment and high-value individuals abroad, shrink the tax base, and leave countries with lower, not higher, revenues.

Mr Davies set out research showing that similar taxes have failed elsewhere, pointing to France as one example where the introduction of a Wealth Tax triggered an exodus of wealth creators while raising only a small fraction of overall tax receipts. He also referenced warnings from respected economic institutions that the UK already depends heavily on a relatively small number of highly mobile taxpayers who can easily relocate in response to tax changes, particularly on assets.

He emphasised that proposals for a Wealth Tax overlook these risks and that pushing ahead in the UK context would be likely to reduce wealth generation, deter business investment, and ultimately leave Wales and the rest of the UK poorer.

Mr Davies argued that, rather than pursuing measures rooted in ‘politics of envy’, Wales and the UK should prioritise policies that encourage entrepreneurship, attract investment, and expand the economy, and address wealth inequalities by building more houses and making property ownership easier.

Commenting, Gareth Davies MS said:

“It’s deeply concerning that a Wealth Tax is becoming fashionable among Plaid, the Greens, and many Labour politicians who are pushing for its inclusion in the Chancellor’s budget despite clear evidence it doesn’t work.

“Wherever it has been tried, it has driven wealth and investment away, shrunk the tax base, and left countries with less revenue to fund public services. With public services already stretched to the brink in North Wales, this is not a risk we should be flirting with.

“It’s frankly bizarre that Welsh Labour politicians are championing a Wealth Tax when their own legacy in Wales is one of lower wages, weaker economic growth, and the highest economic inactivity of all four UK nations.”

“Wales needs policies that encourage economic growth and wealth creation, not those that punish it, and politicians should drop these damaging populist proposals that risk causing irreversible damage.”
