With the upcoming 80th anniversary for the Victory over Japan (VJ) Day fast approaching in just under two weeks’ time, Gareth Davies MS, Senedd Member for Vale of Clwyd, paid a visit on Saturday to Rhuddlan’s VJ Day-themed Picnic in the Park and immersed himself in the 1940s-inspired celebrations.
During the celebrations, Mr Davies joined County Councillor Ann Davies and both had the honour of meeting Basil Pierce, a World War Two veteran, who served during the Second World War, contributing to the end of the war in the Pacific. Mr Pierce reaches a significant milestone next month, as he turns 100 years old.
Gareth Davies enjoyed speaking with Mr Pierce and his family while learning that he is a true Vale of Clwyd resident. Having lived in Rhyl, and later Denbigh, he now resides in Rhuddlan, where the community inspired event commenced.
The family-friendly historical event achieved great success in its second year running, led by Rhuddlan Town Council, which included volunteer fair stalls on Admirals Field. Most importantly, Mr Davies, and other attendees reflected on and celebrated the bravery and service of Basil Pierce and the 365,000 British servicemen who served in the pacific theatre, and secured the freedoms enjoyed today.
Commenting after his visit, Gareth Davies MS said:
"We were deeply honoured to participate in the early VJ Day commemorations, paying tribute to the enduring sacrifices of our service members, whose commitment to our freedoms and nation will never be forgotten.
“The privilege of speaking with Basil, a WWII veteran and centenarian, was a poignant reminder of the dwindling number of those who served.
“It’s important to remember the remarkable service of British troops in the Pacific Theatre, whose courage and contributions remain an unforgettable part of our history.”
Also commenting on the event, Cllr Ann Davies remarked:
“It was a pleasure to honour Basil at this VJ celebration.
“Basil is an inspiration to many of us. Despite being modest about the significance of what he and his fellow veterans did for our country, I think I he enjoyed the afternoon.
“We must never forget.”
