Vale of Clwyd MS and Shadow Cabinet Secretary for North Wales, Gareth Davies MS, was joined by Welsh Conservative Leader Darren Millar MS in visiting Lavinia Stamps in Ruthin to mark the business’s opening at its newly renovated headquarters, The Dreamatorium, nestled in the heart of Ruthin on Well Street.
Lavinia Stamps, established by artist and designer Tracey Dutton, has developed into one of the world’s leading producers of polymer stamps. Known for their intricate designs inspired by fantasy, flora and fauna, the stamps are used by craft enthusiasts both in the UK and internationally. The business’s new home is a Grade II listed building, originally dating back to 1608. It was previously the town’s Conservative Club and has been carefully restored over two years by the Lavinia team. Now repurposed as a retail and creative space, The Dreamatorium serves as a key part of Ruthin’s vibrant arts scene.
During the open day, visitors from across the UK and abroad, including Norway and the Netherlands, took part in craft demonstrations and workshops, many arriving in themed costumes to celebrate Lavinia’s unique artistic world. The event showcased the company’s continued commitment to creativity, accessibility, and community engagement. Lavinia Stamps was born from Tracey Dutton’s early work in ceramics and evolved in 2005 when she began experimenting with stamp-based designs. The business now employs 20 people, turns over £2.5 million annually, and promotes local artists and producers through its range of cards, candles, craft materials, and gifting items.
The visit also brought attention to wider industry challenges, including ongoing issues with copyright infringement by overseas manufacturers producing imitation products, which is relevant to a broader ongoing international discussion regarding intellectual property. Both Gareth and Darren acknowledged the threat this poses to local businesses and noted the need for stronger protections for creative industries in Wales.
In addition to its artistic and economic contributions, Lavinia’s work also promotes wellbeing through creativity. The company provides opportunities for both beginners and seasoned crafters to explore artistic expression, something widely recognised for its positive mental health benefits.
Following the visit, Gareth said:
“I was delighted to visit Lavinia Stamps in Ruthin with the Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Darren Millar MS. The transformation of the building and level of investment to make it a formidable hub for arts and crafts is incredible.
“We’re very lucky to be in an area which can attract such investment, new ideas and a centre for people to visit from both near and far who are looking for something unique that cannot be found in mainstream retail.
“I would like to wish Tracey, Andrew and all the team the very best for the future and I hope their success continues.
“It is certainly worth a visit, and I would highly recommend it to anybody.”
