Member of the Senedd for Vale of Clwyd and Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism, Sport and North Wales, Gareth Davies MS, has voiced concerns regarding a pattern of collisions at multiple locations along the A55. In a letter to the Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates, he called for a safety assessment of the A55 to identify areas with a higher rate of traffic collision occurrence.
Between January 2024 and February 2025, official figures obtained from North Wales Police show that 31 collisions occurred on the A55. In just the past six months, there have been multiple high-profile incidents, including a fatal crash near Anglesey on 23rd May and a mechanical fault leading to a fire in Conwy Tunnel on 19th June.
In his letter he outlined the economic importance of the A55 to North Wales, serving as a key arterial route for visitors travelling to and from North Wales and it’s vital that regional infrastructure is safe and maintained. He asked the Cabinet Secretary to outline what road safety measures are already being taken on the A55 and requested a road safety review to identify high risk locations and set out a plan to address them.
Commenting, Mr Davies added:
“The A55 is the main expressway into North Wales, but its accident record is becoming a real concern for residents and visitors alike.
“While past investment has been welcome, the recent spate of collisions shows that safety risks remain and must be addressed.
“I’ve called on the Welsh Government to act urgently, reassessing the road, addressing collision hotspots, and setting out a clear timetable for further safety improvements to protect lives and rehabilitate the reputation of the road.”
